The 3 Most Important Auto Insurance Reductions

By Todd Sherwin

By this point you have heard 1000 commercials telling you that you can save cash by hunting around for auto insurance rates. That could be true, but if you're already receiving decent rates, or the most interesting rates for your situation, what else can be done to drop those premiums? Concessions. Now bear in mind that some discounts are only going to offer you a small $3-4 greenback a month break. Even those add up over time; but what truly gives a significant discount? Well, it varies by state, but these are a few that typically are the most important.

1. Continuous Previous Insurance

If you have kept an automobile insurance policy active for a minimum time of half a year, you will receive much better rates than somebody who's had gaps in coverage or who have purchased automobile insurance for the first time.

This is not always a 'discount ' as much as it is a method to put a driver in a lower risk company which typically provides their customers with lower rates.

Even an one-day gap in coverage can make you go to a high risk if you try to change companies. If your current policy finishes and you catch it before it's been 30 days, speak to that company and find out how much it might be to reinstate your policy. Frequently it will be less expensive to reinstate and stick with them than it would to go to a new company, but if you find your reinstatement amount is more than you can afford, check around for rates.

2. Multi-Policy Kickbacks

Another big money saver is to mix or bundle policies with the same company. If you are already a homeowner and you own a vehicle, it'll make far more sense to put them together. You might see a savings as much as 40% in somc cases.

If you don't own a home, don't despair. You might not save 40%, but you can still get 2 policies for the price of one. Get tenant insurance. You will provide yourself with some protection for your private possessions and have a little legal security in the event you are sued for a fire. The discount you get on your auto policy for including the renter policy frequently cancels out the price of the renter insurance.

3. Good Student Reductions

Some states it makes more of a difference than others; nonetheless for new drivers and younger drivers, it'll be much more reasonable if you have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Blend that with driver's coaching and an accident prevention course and you can save yourself or your mom and pop hundreds of bucks.

Shopping for auto insurance rates is something you can do to find savings, but be certain to maximize your discounts for the best possible deal no matter which company you choose.
